Four wheels or eight? What the Safari Genius Alley set gets right by doing less

If you have decided on a set, this is the one we lean towards. Fewer wheels, fewer things to break, and a colour that hides scuffs.
Safari sells two very similar three-piece sets: this Genius Alley on four wheels, and the Pentagon Pro on eight. Same brand, same three sizes, same polypropylene hard shells. The wheel count is the real difference, so let us look at it properly.
Four wheels
Four spinner wheels that turn 360 degrees are easy to steer through a crowded airport. They are simpler, with fewer small parts, and wheels are the part of any suitcase most likely to break.
The downside: a heavy four-wheel bag can feel like it wants to roll away on a slope, and it can feel a little less planted on rough floors.
Eight wheels
Eight wheels, as four pairs, spread the weight and tend to glide more smoothly and quietly with a heavy load. The trade-off is more parts that can wear or snap in the hold.
How the two sets compare
- Wheels: Genius Alley has 4, Pentagon Pro has 8
- Shell: polypropylene hard case on both
- Sizes: cabin, medium and large on both
- Colour: Deep Forest green here, which hides scuffs, versus a wide choice on the Pentagon Pro, from Luxury Beige and Rose Gold to Navy Blue and Dark Grey
- Warranty: neither title mentions one, so check the listing details for both
What we would check
- Try a four-wheel and an eight-wheel bag in a shop if you can. Wheel feel is personal.
- Extend the handle and give it a wiggle. Wobbly handles are the most common luggage complaint.
- Look for the empty weight of each bag.
- Be honest about whether all three bags will travel.
Our take
For most people buying a set, the simpler four-wheel Genius Alley is the practical, low-fuss choice. If the smoothest possible glide matters more to you than fewer moving parts, the Pentagon Pro is its fancier twin.
Families who will use all three sizes and want something low-fuss.
You mostly fly with hand luggage only.
